Growing on YouTube: it is a search engine, not a recommendation feed

YouTube grows almost opposite to TikTok. TikTok runs on recommendations; YouTube runs on search. Title and thumbnail decide click-through, watch time decides promotion, and subscriber count is an outcome rather than a lever.

The short version

Most YouTube traffic comes from search and suggested videos, not the home feed. That means picking topics by "what will people search for," not "what will go viral." Taking the TikTok playbook — chase trends, optimize the first 3 seconds — to YouTube usually fails, because the entries are fundamentally different.

Start with search intent

Type your keyword into the YouTube search bar and look at the suggestions plus the "people also search for" panel. Those are real search volumes. A video that answers a searched question keeps bringing views for two years. A trend-chasing video is dead in two weeks. That longevity is YouTube's biggest asset and the most commonly ignored one.

Title and thumbnail decide click-through

YouTube shows a thumbnail and a title, and users actively choose what to watch. Within the same set of recommendations, a 2x difference in CTR is common — and CTR directly determines promotion. Keep text off the thumbnail (unreadable on phones) and put the keyword early in the title (search results truncate).

Watch time decides promotion

The signal YouTube cares about most is average view duration and completion rate, not likes. An 8-minute video watched for 6 minutes beats a 20-minute video watched for 3. So do not make long videos as a new channel — keep them short, get completion up, then extend.

Subscribers are a result, not a lever

The intuition is "grow subscribers first, then views." It is actually the reverse: views bring subscribers. A video that takes off pulls subscribers with it. Subscribers gained without content that people watch will not bring you views. Do not treat subscriber count as the goal.

When acceleration makes sense

YouTube has a specific threshold: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours before monetization. Many channels stall exactly there. If the goal is monetization eligibility or making the channel look established, a subscriber service clears that step. Same caveat as everywhere else — accelerated subscribers do not watch, do not contribute watch hours, and channel growth still depends on content.

Baselines

YouTube engagement rate is conventionally calculated against views; 2%-5% is a common range. The more useful number is average view duration as a percentage — above 50% means the content fits, below 30% means either the title oversold or the video drags. Those two problems need opposite fixes.

Pricing

Subscribers, views, likes, and watch hours are separate services on YouTube, and the price gap is large — subscribers typically cost several times what views do, because delivering them is harder. Check the YouTube services page or the full price list.
